ABOUT 214ID
214 Innovation & Development
Matthew Sanfilippo founded 214 Innovation & Development to make three decades of C-level operating experience directly available to the CEOs, Deans, boards, and founders facing the decisions that most define their organizations.
As the founding Chief Partnership Officer of Carnegie Mellon University's College of Engineering, the inaugural executive responsible for large-scale strategic partnerships, he built the institutional model for major corporate and government research engagement, doubled externally funded engineering research in six years, and managed an annual research portfolio exceeding $125M. He co-founded CMU's Engineering Research Accelerator and established research institutes focused on advanced manufacturing, smart infrastructure, and complex engineered systems. He also founded and led a state-level economic development program connecting more than 350 engineering and technology companies with university research teams.
Earlier in his career, he served as Managing Director of Applied Technology at Michael Baker Corporation, directing a consulting division focused on engineering digital technologies; as Innovation Director at a venture capital and operating company, evaluating and scaling early-stage technology investments; and as CIO of a national environmental engineering firm.
His governance experience spans privately held engineering and technology companies, financial services, and mission-driven nonprofits. He has held roles as Chairman, Vice Chairman, and committee chair across Nominating & Governance, Audit & Risk, Innovation, and IT committees, and served on the Independent Transaction Committee for a successful ESOP conversion. He currently serves on the boards of Synergy Comp, KTA-Tator, Inc., and The Landmarks Financial.
Throughout his career he has worked directly with organizations including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Apple, IBM, Intel, Ford, General Motors, Bombardier, Wabtec, Westinghouse, and Milwaukee Tool, and with Federal agencies including DARPA, ARPA-H, DOD, DOE, NASA, NIH, NIST, and NSF.
